Wilmington is closer to us than people who have not tried it expect. The Delaware Memorial Bridge puts the east side of the city about ten miles and twenty minutes from the shop, and a fair number of our customers cross it in the other direction every morning anyway. What brings Wilmington cars over here is usually one of two things: a stone off I-95, or a window that went in overnight while the car was parked on the street.
I-95 through the city is the worst piece of road for glass anywhere in this region, and it is not close. It is a heavily trafficked urban interstate with construction somewhere along it more or less permanently, temporary surfaces, concrete barriers pinching the lanes in, and a high proportion of trucks either routed through or pushed onto I-495 alongside. Following distances collapse, and everything that comes off a tyre gets thrown at whatever is behind. If you commute on it you will collect chips; the only question is whether you deal with them at $60 to $130 each or wait and pay $250 to $450 for the glass. We open at 7:30, which is early enough to drop a car off and still get where you are going.
I-95 cuts straight through Wilmington with I-495 running around the east side as the truck bypass, and between them they start most of the stone damage on that side of the river. Route 13 and Route 202 carry the local traffic north and south. The streets in the older neighbourhoods are narrow and kerbside-parked, and in places they are still brick or patched over brick, which shakes a cracked windshield every single time you drive it. Downtown parking is street parking or a deck, and a car that lives on a city street is a car that eventually loses a side window. Getting out toward us means picking up I-295 and crossing the bridge, which is the fastest ten miles of the trip by a distance.

Interstate stone comes first: I-95 and I-495 through and around the city, with construction zones, temporary surfaces and heavy truck volume all working together. Second is overnight break-ins on street-parked cars, which is what fills the diary for door and quarter glass rather than windshields. Third is the brick and patched surfaces in the older neighbourhoods, where a crack that would sit still on a smooth road walks across the screen over a few weeks of vibration. Fourth is winter treatment on the interstates, which loads the glass with grit that dry wipers then grind in. Fifth is contact damage from parking hard against kerbs and other vehicles in streets that were never sized for modern cars.
Pick up I-295 east and cross the Delaware Memorial Bridge. On the New Jersey side, come off toward Route 130 north rather than continuing on I-295, and follow Route 130 a couple of miles to Penns Grove; turn west into the borough and we are at 304 North Virginia Avenue. About ten miles and twenty minutes outside rush hour, and there is a toll on the bridge, so have E-ZPass or be ready to pay. Coming home the same way is quick because you rejoin the interstate right at the bridge rather than fighting your way across town first.
