Penns Grove is small enough to walk end to end, and almost every car in it sleeps on the street. The blocks are narrow, the houses sit close to the kerb, and parking runs down both sides, so a car spends its nights outdoors a few hundred yards from the Delaware River. That river is the thing people underestimate. The air coming off it is damp and carries salt, and over a few winters it goes after the wiper arms, the trim along the top of the screen and any bare metal on the pinchweld the glass is bonded to. When we take an old windshield out of a car that has lived here twenty years, the frame underneath usually wants cleaning up before new glass goes in. That is part of doing the job properly, not an extra line on the bill.
The other half of it is that we are in town rather than out on a ramp somewhere. People drop the keys, walk home and get a call when the car is ready. Common windshields are on the shelf.
