Salem is the oldest town in the county and it parks like one. Broadway and the streets off it were laid out for carriages, the houses come right down to the pavement, and for most addresses there is nowhere to put a car except in front of the house. Add the county offices, the courts and everybody who works in them, and by mid-morning the kerb space through the middle of town is full. Cars sit out overnight on blocks with patchy lighting, and a good share of our Salem work starts with a call about a side window that was there at eleven and gone by seven.
The town also works for a living, which is the other half of the story. The port on the Salem River takes ships, Route 49 carries the trucks that serve it, and a large number of people here drive south every day to the generating stations at Artificial Island, a long run down narrow county roads before the shift even starts. That mileage shows up in the glass we take out. Salem made glass commercially for well over a century, so there is something fitting about a Salem car turning up with a tempered side window in the footwell. We are twenty minutes away and open 7:30 to 4 on weekdays.
Broadway runs through the middle of Salem as Route 49 and does three jobs at once: it is the historic street, the shopping street and the truck route serving the port and the plants. Market Street carries the traffic to the county buildings, and the blocks around it are tight enough to be effectively one lane when both sides are parked, with kerbs high enough to catch a wheel. Route 45 begins here and runs north out of town toward Woodstown. Head south and east instead and the roads narrow again and run out onto the marsh toward Hancocks Bridge. The combination of heavy vehicles on an eighteenth-century street plan, high kerbs, and parked cars sitting inches from a passing truck's mirror is not something we deal with anywhere else we cover.

Break-ins first, by a distance. Tempered door and quarter glass goes in seconds on a quiet street, and the mess ends up somewhere much worse than the seat. Second is contact damage on the narrow blocks, where a truck or a van squeezing past a parked car catches a mirror or clips a wing, and mirror glass and quarter lights are a routine job here for exactly that reason. Third is stone off Route 49, which carries port and plant traffic straight through the residential middle of town. Fourth is the commute south, where miles of narrow county road with broken edges flex a windshield that already has a chip in it until the chip is a crack. Fifth is the big street trees, which drop limbs in summer storms onto cars that have nowhere else to be.
Route 49 north out of Salem, through Pennsville and up to the Deepwater interchange, then Route 130 north into Penns Grove; turn west into the borough for 304 North Virginia Avenue. That is about nine miles and fifteen to twenty minutes depending on the lights along Broadway in Pennsville. If Route 49 is stacked up behind port traffic, the alternative is Route 45 north to Woodstown and Route 40 west to Carneys Point, which is longer in miles but sometimes quicker in practice.
