Quinton is creek country. The land is low, the ditches are tidal, and the roads follow field boundaries rather than any plan, so getting anywhere involves a series of right-angle turns on two-lane tarmac with a drop into water on one side of you. The vehicles here work for a living: pickups, farm trucks, older sedans doing twenty thousand miles a year on surfaces that were never engineered for that. Glass takes its beating not from one dramatic event but from years of small ones, a hard drop into a broken edge, a stone off a tractor tyre, a branch on a lane nobody has cut back since spring.
Distance is the other factor, and it changes the advice we give. We are about twenty-five minutes away up Route 49 through Salem, which is nothing if the car is drivable and a genuine problem if it is not. A windshield with a crack across the passenger side is still a car you can bring to us. A back window that has gone completely is not really a car you want on Route 49 in February with the heater fighting a hole. Route 49 is the through road, running from Salem out east toward Bridgeton and passing the village on the way. Everything else is county road and farm lane: the road north toward Alloway, and a network of narrow lanes running down toward Alloway Creek and the marsh beyond it. Those lanes have no shoulder, no lighting, and a soft edge that crumbles wherever wheels drop off the tarmac, which is why there is so much loose material lying on the surface. Tidal ditches run alongside a good many of them. In summer the field traffic is constant, tractors, trailers and produce trucks moving between farms, and all of it shares the same single lane in each direction that everyone else is using.

Farm tyres first. A tractor or a loaded trailer running on a lane with a broken edge picks up stone in the tread and releases it behind, and on a single-track road you are close enough behind to catch it in the screen. Second is the crumbling tarmac edge itself, which puts loose material on the carriageway continuously rather than in one event. Third is overhanging growth on the lanes down toward the creek, where a branch at windscreen height in a wind is a real hazard rather than a theoretical one. Fourth is sheer mileage on rough surfaces, which works an old chip loose over months. Route 49 west into Salem, then Route 49 north out of the other side of town through Pennsville to the Deepwater interchange, then Route 130 north into Penns Grove and west to 304 North Virginia Avenue. About twenty-five minutes and the only slow part is Broadway through Salem. The alternative, going north to Alloway and on to Woodstown to pick up Route 40 west, is longer and only worth it if Route 49 is blocked.
