Vineland is laid out on a scale nothing else around here is: a grid of long, straight, wide avenues over a very large area, most of it with driveways and off-street parking, and traffic that moves quickly between widely spaced lights. That produces a particular kind of glass damage. Very little of what we see from Vineland is parking damage or break-in damage. It is nearly all stone, picked up at speed by somebody doing forty-five when the vehicle in front kicked something up off the surface.
We are forty minutes away on Route 40, which is honest enough that we should say what it means for you. For a chip, the drive is longer than the repair, half an hour in the bay at $60 to $130, so it only makes sense if you are heading this way anyway or if you would rather deal with someone who will tell you plainly whether it can be filled at all. The avenues are wide and the blocks are long, so speeds are higher than the surroundings suggest and following distances are shorter than they ought to be. Outside the built-up centre, Vineland turns into farmland and greenhouses very quickly, with sandy soil that blows onto the road and packing-house traffic joining from unpaved entrances. Sand is not as dramatic as stone, but it is relentless, and it is what pits a windshield until night driving into oncoming headlights becomes genuinely unpleasant.

Stone at speed on the long avenues comes first, because Vineland drives faster than its surroundings and closer together than it should. Second is sand and grit, blown off the fields and dragged across the glass by wipers until the whole screen scatters light. That one creeps up on people and gets diagnosed as bad headlights on other cars. Third is agricultural and packing traffic joining from unpaved entrances with material still on the tyres. Route 40 west and stay on it. It takes you out past Elmer, through the farm country, across the Woodstown crossroads and on into Carneys Point, where you pick up Route 130 north into Penns Grove; turn west into the borough for 304 North Virginia Avenue. About thirty-five miles and forty to forty-five minutes. It is one road for the great majority of the journey, so it is an easy trip even in an unfamiliar car.
