New Castle is the nearest place to us that is not in New Jersey, and the drive is short enough to surprise people: fifteen minutes, one bridge, and no city traffic at either end. The town itself is two things at once. There is the historic quarter down by the river, where the streets are cobbled, the houses have no driveways, and cars park on stone that has been in the ground for centuries. And there is everything else, Route 13 and Route 9, the industrial river frontage, the airport and the business parks around it, and the residential streets that serve all of them.
Both halves send us work, for opposite reasons. The cobbles are a slow, mechanical problem. A windshield with a chip in it gets vibrated at a frequency no smooth road produces, and damage that would have sat quietly for a year runs across the screen in a couple of months. The Route 13 corridor is the fast version: trucks, industrial traffic and stone off the drive axle in front of you. Whichever kind you have, catching it early is $60 to $130 and half an hour of your time, and we are close enough that dropping the car in and getting a lift back over the bridge is a realistic way to spend a morning rather than a fantasy.
I-295 comes off the Delaware Memorial Bridge and meets Route 9 and Route 13 within a couple of miles, which is where most of New Castle's traffic sorts itself out. Route 13 runs north toward Wilmington past industrial frontage and truck yards; Route 9 heads south along the river. The historic district is a grid of narrow streets down at the water, cobbles and brick on the older ones including the Strand and Delaware Street, with kerbside parking and no off-street option at all. Around the airport and the business parks the roads are wide, fast and full of commercial vehicles. There is very little in between: it is either three-hundred-year-old street surface or highway, and both are hard on glass in their own way.

Vibration leads here, which is unusual enough to be worth saying plainly: the cobbles and brick in the old town turn a stable chip into a running crack faster than anything else we see on the Delaware side. Second is truck stone from the Route 13 corridor, where industrial traffic and yards put loose material onto a fast road. Third is the bridge approach itself, where concrete expansion joints deliver a rhythmic knock every time you cross. Fourth is street parking in the historic district, where there is nowhere else to leave a car and passing vehicles have very little room. Fifth is winter grit on the highway corridor, dragged across the screen by wipers until the glass is pitted.
Join I-295 and head east over the Delaware Memorial Bridge. On the New Jersey side take Route 130 north rather than staying on I-295, and follow it a couple of miles into Penns Grove; turn west into the borough for 304 North Virginia Avenue. Fifteen minutes in ordinary traffic, and the bridge is most of it, so have E-ZPass ready for the toll. If you are coming out of the historic district, work your way to Route 9 or Route 13 first and pick up the interstate from there rather than trying to navigate the old grid with a cracked windshield in front of you.

Where it works best is a vehicle that cannot safely be driven, or several vehicles at one address or business park.
