What actually breaks side glass out here is rarely dramatic. It is reversing a pickup between a fence post and a trailer tongue, swinging a door into a gate post in the dark, a stone thrown sideways off a flail mower working the verge, a deer coming over the front wing on an unlit stretch of county road, or a work van left overnight on a lot off Route 130. The pane goes and the vehicle is suddenly not weatherproof, which matters more than the glass does, because water running down inside a door skin finds the wiring loom, the speaker and the back of the door card long before it finds the carpet.
The fitting is quick. Getting the vehicle properly clean is not, and that is the part that decides whether you are back in six months. Tempered glass collapses into cubes and gravity takes them straight down the belt line into the bottom of the door, where they settle on the drain slots. Every time the window travels after that, the mechanism drags them back up through the felt run channels against the face of the new pane. So the cavity gets vacuumed out through the access holes, the channels get cleared rather than wiped, the drains get checked and the regulator is run up and down several times before the vehicle leaves.
