Late summer through the fall is chip season out here, and it has very little to do with the weather. Field entrances shed stone onto the blacktop every time a tractor turns in, grain and dump trucks run the county roads with loaded beds, and any road that gets a fresh tar-and-chip surface throws loose aggregate for weeks after it is laid. You usually do not hear the strike that matters. You notice it two days later as a small bright pit low down or off to the passenger side, and you decide to deal with it at some point.
That point is the expensive part. Resin fills a break while it is still clean and dry inside. It cannot do much with one that has had a fortnight of road grit, wash water and screenwash pressed into it, and it cannot rebuild a crack that has already travelled. The work itself is a short careful sequence: the break is cleaned and dried out properly, resin is drawn in under vacuum so the air comes out of the legs of the star instead of getting trapped in them, then pushed home under pressure, cured hard and polished flat so the wipers pass cleanly over it. What you are left with is a faint mark you have to look for and glass that is structurally whole again.
